System of anti-blocking of brakes (ABS) – the general information and codes of malfunctions

General information

When the vehicle is equipped with the brake system of usual type, sharp squeezing of a pedal of a foot brake leads to blocking of wheels. At the same time coupling of a protector with a paving is broken, and the car can start to skid, having lost controllability. The system of anti-blocking of brakes (ABS) is designed to prevent premature blocking of wheels, continuously operating the speed of their rotation during braking due to modulations of pressure of hydraulic liquid in each of brake mechanisms.

ABS consists of two main subsystems: electric and hydraulic. Four sensors of speed of rotation of wheels, the processor of management and a set of a connecting electrical wiring enter an electric part of system. A hydraulic part includes pressure modulator, supports of disk brake mechanisms and hydraulic lines connecting among themselves components.

The principle of functioning of system is rather simple. Each of wheels is equipped with the individual RPM meter. The sensor consists of a rotor (a ring with the teeth which are evenly located on its perimeter) and a sensitive element in the form of the podmagnichenny coil. The sensitive element of the sensor fixes the moments of passing of rotor teeths by it and will transform the obtained information to electric signals, control of ABS which are continuously transferred on the processor. By results of processing of the arriving signals the processor obtains information on the relative speed of rotation of each of wheels. While all four wheels rotate with an identical frequency, ABS stays in a passive state. As soon as any of wheels begins to be blocked, the processor fixes change of the entering signal and develops the command for operation of the modulator which is instantly dumping pressure of hydraulic liquid in the brake mechanism of the corresponding wheel. As soon as normal rotation of a wheel is restored, the processor stops functioning of the modulator.

Actually the scheme of functioning of ABS is much more difficult, than it can seem therefore authors of the present manual do not recommend to owners of cars to make attempts of independent performance of repair of system. In case of malfunctions it will be most reasonable to address specialists of car service.

Reading of codes of malfunctions of ABS

1. At start of the engine the control lamp of ABS on an instrument guard of the car has to join quickly and almost at once again go out. If because of any violation the lamp remains included after implementation of start of the engine, the ABS processor writes down the corresponding digital code in memory of the block of self-diagnostics. For reading of a code on a control lamp:
   a) Release the plug of the diagnostic socket from the cover located under a ware box (see the Head of the Control system of the engine);
   b) Connect two contacts of the socket a wire crossing point.

1. Include ignition (the engine do not start). Two seconds later after turning of a key in situation the ON ABS processor will begin to give the codes of malfunctions which are written down in his memory, appealing a blinking of a control lamp of ABS on an instrument guard of the car. Highlighting of codes begins with a pause lasting 3.6 seconds. Then the sequence of impulses of the first of written down in the processor memory of a code is given (a series of blinkings of the main code, then, after a second pause, – a series of blinkings of an additional code [if that is provided]). Further, after a five-second pause, the combination of codes (the main and additional) the second malfunction, etc. is highlighted. The system allows to read out any quantity of codes. Having written down only a few information, compare it to the card of codes given on the accompanying table.

Further, after a five-second pause, the combination of codes (the main and additional) the second malfunction, etc. is highlighted. The system allows to read out up to three codes.
2. If you lost count when reading codes, switch off ignition, then again include it and begin anew. Do not forget that any repair of ABS has to be made by specialists of car service.

Cleaning of the processor memory of ABS

After elimination debugged system the processor memory it has to be cleared.

1. For cleaning of the processor memory remove a wire crossing point from plugs of the diagnostic socket, then not less than for three seconds take ABS B2 safety lock on 15 A of the car of the assembly block installed in a motive compartment. Insert into place a safety lock and connect the plug of the diagnostic socket to a cover.

1. Without removing a wire crossing point, switch off ignition, then squeeze out a pedal of a foot brake and again turn the ignition key in position of ON. When the control lamp of ABS on an instrument guard goes out, release a pedal – the lamp has to join again. Again squeeze out a pedal and wait for shutdown of a lamp. Release a pedal.
2. The control lamp has to blink twice, confirming processor memory cleaning then it is possible to switch off ignition, to remove a wire crossing point and to restore initial connection of the diagnostic socket.
